Water To Air Heat Exchanger Explained

A water-to-air heat exchanger transfers heat from water to air. People often mistake these for car radiators. The hot water passes through copper tubes with metal fins attached. Tubes and fins are heated by circulating hot water from the boiler. To provide warmth, a blower fan turns on and blows air through the fins and tubes. Heat is effectively transferred from hot water to the air by a water-air heat exchanger. This type of heat exchanger is typically found in outdoor boiler applications when connecting a unit to an existing forced-air furnace. Condominiums and apartment buildings use heat to water exchangers for residential air conditioning, heating, and dehumidification. For Better Heat Transfer in Water to Air Heat Exchanger A179 Tube and SA 179 Tubes Are Important Elements In Heat Exchanger.

In forced air ducts, water-to-air heat exchangers are most commonly used. The drawing below illustrates this. The heat exchangers are usually installed above the forced air furnace plenum. These are available in several sizes, and are often installed by attaching “L-Brackets” to the inside of the plenum on which the heat exchanger rests in a “flat” orientation.

A heat exchanger transfers heat between two or more liquids or gases of different temperatures. The heat transfer process can be gas-to-gas, liquid-to-gas, or liquid-to-liquid, and usually does not involve direct contact between the two fluids. A liquid to gas heat exchanger, and more specifically a water to air heat exchanger, is discussed in this article.

Technology

To maximize heat transfer between water and air, tube coils are accompanied by aluminum fins. The air-to-water heat exchanger is enclosed in a metal frame to reinforce its structure. The hot water or other suitable solution enters the supply manifold of the water to air heat exchanger and is separated into coils, which carry it throughout the heat Heat exchanger to return heat exchanger. Heat from the water is dispersed into the surrounding environment through the copper tube walls with the help of aluminum fins that are permanently attached to the copper tube coils.

As air passes through the heat exchanger, its temperature rises. The process is similar with cold water or other cooling liquids when the heat exchanger is used for cooling. When a finned coil heat exchanger is used to heat or cool liquid using the temperature of the air that passes through it, reverse thermal exchange occurs. In this case, the unit is used as an air-to-water heat exchanger.

For heating water in residential and public buildings, air-to-water units are ideal. Utilizing copper tubes with a high density of aluminum fins, a compact and lightweight design ensures maximum heat transfer. Water to air heat exchangers is used to transfer hot water to the air. When connecting units to existing forced air furnaces, they are commonly used in outdoor boiler applications.  The wide selection of standard size finned coil heat exchangers (water to air heat exchangers) with sizes 12” x 12″ and above.
